Resources for Self-Help Groups

Community Needs Assessment – Existing and potential new Self-Help Groups may find it useful to do a Community Needs Assessment to help identify their support needs and plan their activity. The key Community Needs Assessment steps are to:

Define Your Community

Identify Your Assets. (people and buildings)

Collect Community Data.

Compile a Community Needs Assessment Report.

Create an Action Plan.

The Community Needs Assessment Report should identify what the local communities of people with respiratory difficulty do for each other, who supports them, where they meet and what future resources, expertise and support do they think will help.

Support Group Evaluation – Existing groups wishing to help improve their service may wish to obtain feedback from their members using a Support Group Evaluation Form. This would include questions such as:

  • How did you hear about the group?
  • Has attending the group had a positive effect on any of your conditions?
  • What would you say were the most useful aspects of the group to you personally?
  • What, if anything, do you feel would enhance the group?

With information of this type, you can make improvements to the way in which your group operates.
